Last month I got asked to shoot for the May issue of Philadelphia Magazine. This article was about the 35th Philadelphia Broad Street Run and Lorraine Cephus who has run this race for all 35 years. Lorraine Cephus is 84. From an inaugurating run of 1,575 runners, the crowd has now boomed to 40,000. But as her age disadvantages her to run all the marathons except for the Broad Street Run, the evolution of Philly continues to solace her. Smooth-running trains, fortified streets and buildings, though the JFK is gone, the Navy Yard, she claims, now looks even better than any other finish lines she’s had through the years. And for Lorraine, she will live by her promise: to run the Broad Street Run the years will have in her keeping, the true essence of her Philly residency.
