I haven’t posted in a small while so I thought I would share a fun little project I have been working on. I have lived in Los Angeles, for the most part, since 2004 and moved to Echo Park playing in bands and making art. L.A. is such an unique town. Let me back-up. I have moved around a ton. And lived in quite a few cities. Every town is an unique place that creates a interesting pool of locals and customs. None of this is groundbreaking news but I digress. While I love the places I have lived, like Chicago and Philadelphia, I always come back to L.A. If you go beyond the douchy-ness of Hollywood, you find a rich culture of art and individualism. I always believed, for good and bad, Southern California is still the wild west. People move out west to create the life they want for themselves. The Palm Desert is a great example. It is turning into a whimsical self made artist colony. It’s so motivating to be apart of it.
If you haven’t seen L.A. Story, you should. A little dated but I think the themes hold true enough. The movie pokes fun at L.A. in a very loving way. This Steve Martin film has one of my favorite quotes about Los Angeles.
“Roland thinks L.A. is a place for the brain-dead. He says, if you turned off the sprinklers, it would turn into a desert. But I think – I don’t know, it’s not what I expected. It’s a place where they’ve taken a desert and turned it into their dreams. I’ve seen a lot of L.A. and I think it’s also a place of secrets: secret houses, secret lives, secret pleasures. And no one is looking to the outside for verification that what they’re doing is all right.”
Anyway, I have started a simple portrait project taking stock of friends, loved ones, and new acquaintances I have met along the way here in L.A. Over the years I have worked on something similar to this project. In time I may in time wrap them all together. I went around during Halloween for years in LA and photographed people’s costumes. The creativity blows me away. You can find some of the photographs here.
