Gene Louis is one of my favorite people to shoot. His EP comes out soon with some of my photographs in the sleeve. He let me drag him out in L.A. in the middle of the night so I can shoot these urban portraits when nobody is around. I wanted to play with high ISO’s and available light. It is so weird how much L.A. turns into a ghost town at night. I read somewhere that Richard Matheson based his novel I Am Legend in Los Angeles for that very reason. In fact according to the wikipedia page about the film “The Omega Man“:
The movie takes place in Los Angeles and as part of the plot the city is supposed to be void of human activity except for Neville. A number of tricks were used to make the city appear deserted. This objective was accomplished in part by simply filming on a Sunday morning in the center of L.A.’s business district, when pedestrian movement is limited. Despite careful planning by the film crew, there are instances in which bystanders were captured on film in the distance and appear briefly in scenes.
HA! Simply film on a Sunday. Try that in NYC. Love you L.A.!
